Company Manifesto

Stuart McPherson
Artistic Director

Stuart has been an amateur director for over ten years and has been training since a young age with the intention of setting up Upstage Left with his closest friend.

He has gained a varied experience from his college in Nottinghamshire and his University (Bretton Hall) and also from his time directing at the Fringe Festival whilst he lived in Edinburgh.

His passion for new and challenging theatre began with his discovery of ‘In Yer Face’ theatre mainly produced at the National Theatre and Royal Court in the mid-nineties and also gaining an avid interest in Edward Bond’s work from a young age.

That influence along with experience directing plays by the likes of Edward Albee, Steven Berkoff and even more classical influences like Moliere and Shakespeare has made Stuart a very diverse director, willing and able to apply his hand to a wide variety of work.

With Upstage Left he aims to take his directing further and access brand new elements to his manner of direction, in the knowledge that in the case of new writing, each piece can take on it’s own style as the rehearsal process progresses and adapts.
